What are our thoughts on the new iPhone X from Apple?

iPhone X Apple

Since Tuesday evening (CET) the new Apple iPhone X has been the hottest topic around. Most of us followed its official unveiling and were left totally surprised...the question is whether in a positive or negative way?

The last few days had the majority of us waiting in expectation for the special Apple Event which, for the first time, took place in the underground theatre of Steve Jobs on the 12th of September. Apple introduced their new Apple Watch Series 3, Apple TV 4K and the latest iPhone 8, 8 Plus and the highly anticipated iPhone X

What does the new iPhone X bring to the table?

After the presentations of the fresh iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus models we were left even more hyped and hungry for something novel and original, as the aforementioned two devices did not include as many updates as expected. However, the iPhone X is an entirely different beast… in quite a few ways. First of all, we can say our farewells to the Home button as the front panel of the new iPhone sports an all encompassing display, with the only disruption of its surface being the cut-out for the camera, sensors and speaker.

Unlocking the device with one’s fingerprint via Touch ID is now also a thing of the past and on the new iPhone X it has been replaced by Face ID. This is setup by scanning your face and subsequently should work just as well in full daylight as in the darkness of night. Unlocking will require some sort of gesture as well - something along the lines of a wink, head movement etc.

Apple also applied its Face ID technology to emojis and introduced Animoji. The idea is that your face will be linked with emojis which in turn will adjust according to your expression and thus automatically create an Animoji. This should make for quite a bit of fun!

The iPhone X will be offered in 64GB and 256GB versions, with the starting price being set at 999 dollars. Apple presents this model as an inevitable beginning to a new era of smartphones.

What are our thoughts on it?

One of our founds Richard has declared the following:

“During the first moments after the introduction of the new iPhone X I was feeling a bit baffled and disappointed. The first thing that disturbed me was Apple’s change in the naming convention and the sudden jump from 8 to X. The second thing that did not exactly make me happy was the removal of the Home button to which I have grown accustomed since the very beginning. However, the more I look at this new smartphone, the more I am starting to like it :D. Personally I am really curious as to how the Face ID will work - what if I for example perform a radical shave or grow an even larger beard? :D”

Our graphic designer Noro cut right to the chase and compared the new iPhone X to his Samsung Galaxy S8 :

The iPhone X looks quite intriguing, especially when it comes to its performance, AR (Augmented Reality) support and to me personally also its design, even though it might not be everyone’s cup of tea. However I have to state that Apple has not really shown anything revolutionary. The iPhone X is more or less a lower performing version of the year old (and 400 Euro cheaper) Samsung Galaxy S8, sans Touch ID and hardware Home button. The retina recognition of the Galaxy has not been a major success and did not fully replace its Touch sensor and thus I am really curious whether the Face ID sensor will function fluently, and whether this approach from Apple will be successful.”
